Travelling to School

Windy Ridge School is committed to safe and active travel to and from school. We encourage families to walk, scooter or cycle safely to school.

Travelling to and from school

At Windy Ridge School, the safety of our tamariki is a shared priority. We encourage all students and whānau to take care when travelling to and from school, whether walking, driving or cycling.

Students who walk to school should use the designated pedestrian crossing and follow safe walking routes. Families can support their children by talking with them about potential hazards, modelling crossing at the zebra crossing and helping them choose the safest route between home and school.

The pedestrian crossing at our front gate is supervised by our school road patrol from 8.30am and again after school. Our Year 6 road patrol students are trained by the Police Education Officer and supported by either the Principal or Deputy Principal. The back gate crossing is supervised in the afternoons only.

Walking School Bus

Each morning, our Walking School Bus offers a fun, safe, and organised way for children to walk to school together under the supervision of parent volunteers. The walking school bus begins at the Glenfield Road end of Roberts Road and travels down Seaview Road to the school. For more information please contact the school office.

Bikes and Scooters

All riders need to wear a helmet. Parents accept full responsibility for their child’s safety to and from school outside of the school grounds, and the security of the bike/scooter while at school.

Parking

Like all New Zealand schools parking can be an issue in the morning and afternoon, however parking is available along the roads around the school. Please do not park and leave your car on the yellow lines as this obstructs the view of our road patrollers or over the neighbours driveways.

We ask all drivers to take extra care around the school. Please drive slowly, be patient and wait until the crossing is completely clear before moving forward. Cars must not stop on the pedestrian crossing, as this prevents our road patrol students from carrying out their duties safely.
