Athletics
It has been another great week with the children out in the sunshine playing and learning. Don’t forget we are hosting our Junior Athletics Day tomorrow and Senior Athletics on Friday morning, with the whole school track finals on Friday afternoon. We are really looking forward to two great days of sporting endeavour and fun, and we are really hoping that we will get lots of parents attending and cheering on the athletes. Please make sure your child has a sun hat and are wearing comfortable clothing to participate in and has a drink bottle to keep themselves well hydrated.
- Junior Athletics – Thursday 11:00 – 2:30 pm
- Senior Athletics – Friday 9:00 – 12:30 pm
- Whole School Track Finals – Friday 1.30 – 2.50 pm
- Senior School Rain Day – Monday 9:00 – 12:30 pm
- Junior School Rain Day – to be advised
Staff Change
It is with great sadness that we announce that Mrs Angela Hall will be leaving our school at the end of this year. She has accepted a position at AGE Takapuna and leaves us to follow her passion for working with neurodiverse students. Angela has been at Windy Ridge for 6 years during which time she has taught widely across the school in Fantail, Pukeko, and Falcon and at present is the leader of Kōtare Iti. She has been a huge play-based learning advocate and leader in our school, and in recent years she has worked as our in-school leader of Hauora and Well-being in collaboration with our Kāhui Ako (Community of Schools). We will greatly miss you Angela but wish you every success at your new school.
We are glad to announce that Mrs Jude Tabuteau will be taking over the reins as Team Leader in Kōtare Iti next year in addition to continuing to lead Structured Literacy across the school. We are in the process of finalising our staff for 2023 and this will be shared with whānau along with end-of-year reports and class placements at the end of the term.
We will also be saying goodbye to Mr Nick Upton at the end of the year, as he moves to a new school in the Northern Territories in Australia. Nick has worked at Windy Ridge for 5 years as a classroom teacher in Fantail, Falcon, Pukeko and Kōtare Iti. He will be missed by the students, and I join with his colleagues to wish him success in the future.
Sunsmart
As the summer weather continues to heat up please don’t forget that your child needs to have a sun hat to keep themselves safe as they play outside. All tamariki are encouraged to ‘Slip, Slap and Slop’ – applying sunblock and wearing their hats.
Chicken Pox
Unfortunately, we have noticed an increase in cases of Chicken Pox in the community, if you would like more information about identifying symptoms please check the Ministry of Health website
We look forward to seeing parents and whānau at Athletics Day.
Ka kite anō au i a koutou.

Travelwise Goes to the Cloud
The Travelwise team were buzzing with excitement as we boarded the bus to The Cloud. The Cloud is a famous building that looks like a ginormous worm. It is by the ocean in the city. The tiny waves lapped the shore and the air was salty as we skipped into the building.
Once we arrived, we had an opening awards ceremony. We waited and watched in anticipation. First the bronze schools, then the silver schools… And surprise! We were awarded a Travelwise Silver for 2022. We took a photo, but there was a toucan mascot waving its enormous, furry wing right in Heather’s face, so she was not seen in the picture!
After the awards, we did some inside activities. First, we did one where we had to run on a little paper road and the policewoman timed us. Matthew won out of our school. We looked around for a while and saw a lot more activities. We also enjoyed playing a game called poi rakau. Standing in a circle and holding tall wooden sticks, we had to grab the other person’s stick to our left (maui) or right (matou) before it fell with a clatter to the ground.
After an amazing lunch of ice cream, we set off at a brisk pace to the Maritime Museum. We spotted Sir Peter Blake’s red socks in a glass case that he actually wore!
Finally, we walked all the way to a bus stop, where to our delight there was a double-decker bus! We immediately seated ourselves at the front and gazed out the window. In no time, we were back at school with an awesome memory of The Cloud!

Junky Monkeys
Don’t forget that Junky Monkeys will be coming into school on December 9 to work with the children on a loose parts play day. The children will be able to use the equipment and loose parts to design, make and create to the max. We are hoping that parents who are able to will be able to join us to see and learn more about how Play-based learning operates. Please let either Mrs Tyler (Piwakawaka), Mrs Hall (Kōtare Iti) or Mrs Henderson (Kōtare Nui) know if you are able to come along to support and learn more about our Learning Through Play.
- Pīwakawaka session: 9:00-10:30 am
- Kōtare Iti session: 11:00-12:30 pm
- Kōtare Nui session: 1:30-3:00 pm
Planning for 2023
Can you please let the office office@windyridge.school.nz know if you aren’t returning in February? We are deep in planning our placements for 2023 and need to have definitive numbers.

Sun Hats
As we have done in the past, and as we move into summer we ask that Tamariki have a hat to wear when outside while at school during Term 4 to offer protection from the sun.
School Hours
Please remember that the school hours are 8.30 am to 3 pm. Please remind your children that if you drop them off before this time they are expected to wait in the shelter area. The very earliest that they can be dropped off is 8.00 am. Any earlier and they will be taken to the Skids Before School programme and parents will be invoiced. This is a health and safety issue. Also, we are having some concerning issues with students playing on the front footpath and road areas during unsupervised times. This is also a health and safety issue. We would not want to see any of our students harmed in any way.
Road Patrol
We have a new roster starting this week. However, we are still short of parent supervision. Anybody can be an adult supervisor and it only requires 20 minutes of your time, either in the morning or the afternoon. Training will be provided. Please contact Jane Brown jbrown@windyridge.school.nz or Jenine Maxwell jmaxwell@windyridge.school.nz
