OPENING MID 2023
News from the Principal
Ahakoa ngā uaua, kia toa, kia kaha, kia manawanui
When you find things in life are difficult, be strong, stand tall and be of great heart.
Kia ora koutou katoa,
It was great to welcome Tom and Josh from Basketball NZ, Talia and Ash from Northland and Auckland Basketball, and Rob from Nuzest into school last Friday to celebrate the completion of the new basketball hoop project. We were the 100th school to receive the new equipment and the team joined our students in a session, shooting hoops to mark the occasion. They also, very kindly donate 2 bags of new balls and a signed Basketball New Zealand shirt. I know that both our students and the wider community are enjoying using the new hoops, so a huge thank you once again to Basketball NZ, Nuzest and Hayden Allen for making this happen.
Structured Literacy
Over the past few days, as part of our school-wide Structured Literacy professional development, we have had our Learning Matters consultant Ruth Blair, come and model Spelling lessons across the school with all students. It has been wonderful for teachers to be able to observe expert, explicit teaching through a Structured Literacy Approach.
Ruth commented “Kids are excited to participate in the lesson.” I have seen some fantastic handwriting and enthusiasm sounding out. I even got goosebumps watching the very young learners working with sounds in words.” Ruth also commented, “It has been great to see how teachers at Windy Ridge school are ready and willing to take on board a different teaching pedagogy that reflects the Science of Reading.”
Teacher Appreciation Week
We have celebrated teacher appreciation week this week, with us celebrating our amazing team. We are so lucky to have such dedicated and highly professional teachers here are Windy Ridge and I am sure you will join me in thanking them all for their hard work and dedication.
Pink Shirt Day
On Friday we will be holding Pink Shirt Day as part of New Zealand Bully Free Week, and we are promoting the official theme of Kindness costs nothing but means everything. Mrs Hall is working with teachers and classes to prepare for Friday. We encourage everyone to wear something Pink and consider making a donation to our Pink Shirt Day appeal: https://events.mentalhealth.org.nz/fundraisers/angelahall/pinkshirtday2022
The Building Project
Our building project has moved on at pace this week, with the concrete pad being poured. We are also seeing some of the structural steel arriving on-site and understand this will begin to be going into place very soon. After so much planning and anticipation, it is so good to be seeing the project coming to life.
Please take care and enjoy the rest of your week,
Ka kite anō au i a koutou.
