Ahakoa ngā uaua, kia toa, kia kaha, kia manawanui
When you find things in life are difficult, be strong, stand tall and be of great heart.
Kia ora koutou katoa,
As a school, we are considering how term 2 might look from a Covid perspective. Our thoughts are centred around being able to return to a more normalised schedule and routines. This term we have kept teams separated and operating across staggered breaks, lunchtimes and pick-up times. We feel that this has been a success and has helped to maintain lower infections of Omicron at WRS compared to many other schools. Now though, with infection rates falling and a hinted move to ‘orange’ under the Covid Protection Framework in the near to mid future, we are looking at how we can operate next term. Obviously, our main health measures; handwashing and hygiene, masks, ventilation etc will remain.
We are also thinking about how we mitigate possible health risks associated with opening our school grounds up to non-essential visitors and parents before and after school from next term. Before we do this we feel it would be appropriate to gauge community opinion around such possible plans and will be looking to run a short survey next week. This will also include questions about running community events and functions as we move forward. So, please look out for the survey on Monday or Tuesday of next week and share your thoughts with us.
New Basketball Hoops
We have been working with Hayden Allen from Court Kings to get new basketball hoops fitted on our court. These are kindly being donated by Basketball NZ. They will be able to be used for basketball and netball and be relocated to the new courts in front of our new building when it is finished next year. The installation process has started this week and this is expected to be completed shortly. A huge thank you to Hayden for his support and time in making this project happen, to Court Kings, Basketball NZ and to sponsors Nuzest for funding the project. If anyone knows of a school that would benefit from a pair of slightly used basketball hoops, please let us know. We would love to be able to pay it forward!
Your PTA Needs You
Our amazing Windy Ridge PTA is in need of additional members. They need committee members to help with planning events as well as helpers to assist with events and fundraising activities e.g. helping with sausage sizzles, selling ice blocks etc. If you would like to get involved or help out, Kieren and the PTA would love to hear from you. Please get in touch or email PTA@windyridge.school.nz
End of Daylight Saving
And finally, don’t forget that Daylight Saving ends this weekend, with clocks falling back 1 hour. Remember to change your clocks and watches so that we are all on time for school next week.
Wishing everyone a relaxing weekend.
Ka kite anō au i a koutou.
We are once again offering you the opportunity to participate in the KIWI English, Mathematics and Science competitions. These competitions take place annually and are designed by New Zealand teachers for New Zealand students based on the New Zealand Curriculum. For further information, please consult the CAM website www.canterbury.ac.nz/cam.
The competitions are open to all Year 5-6 students in English, Mathematics and Science. Students can enter in one or more subjects. Each competition will provide parents/caregivers with an individual student report of their child’s overall performance. These are available through your school. The supervised online tests will take place in the last 3 weeks of Term 2 and the first week of Term 3.
If you would like you child to participate in these competitions, please complete the form your child brought home, or register on Kindo.

Like many other schools, we use the services of School Docs who design policies for many New Zealand schools; updating them to reflect current legislation. Periodically parents are asked to review certain policies. This term parents are invited to have their say around the following policies, Visitors – School Closure – Earthquakes – COVID-19 Information and Procedures & COVID-19 Red
. If you would like to participate in the review:
- Visit the website https://windyridge.schooldocs.co.nz/1893.htm
- Enter the username (windyridge) and password (WRS0629).
- Follow the link to the relevant policy as listed.
- Read the policy.
- Click the Policy Review button at the top right-hand corner of the page.
- Select the reviewer type “Parent”.
- Enter your name (optional).
- Submit your ratings and comments.
- If you don’t have internet access, school office staff can provide you with printed copies of the policy and a review form.
- Please don’t forget that your child(ren) need to have a hat to keep them sun safe outside. As is our usual process, children without a hat will be asked to play in the shade.
- Please remember that at Red parents need to remain offsite. If you need to collect your child early please ring the office to arrange this.
- Please remember our staggered pickup times, at 2:40 pm for Pīwakawaka, 2:50 pm for Kōtare Iti, and 3:00 pm for Kōtare Nui. We ask that parents and caregivers dropping off and picking up at the gate wear a mask.
I have registered one Y1/2 team, one Y3/4 team and two Y5/6 teams. I would still like 1 or 2 more registrations in our Y 1/2 team. I will close off Kindo registrations for the other teams on Monday – the teams are full. I will contact parents next week to work out play day preferences as well as training sessions etc.
