Dear Whanau,

Despite last Sunday having been the shortest day, winter seems like it’s really set in this week.  It’s been cold and dark and a little bleak.  But it is nice to know that very slowly our days are getting longer – its downhill on the way to spring!  In the meantime, it’s only seven more school days until the school holidays.  Speaking for myself and the staff, it has felt like an endless term.  Not only is Term Two 12 weeks long instead the usual 9 or 10, but we also worked right through the Term 1 holidays, so it has felt like a 23 week term to us.  It’s worth remembering that our learners will no doubt be feeling the same way – exhausted!!  I’ve given the staff strict instructions to take a really good break over the holidays.  I hope you and your children will do the same.

Front carpark

I am sure you may be finding the roadworks out the front of the school as frustrating as we have, but a big kapai to those of you who have used it as an opportunity to develop your children’s resilience (and fitness) by dropping them a little further away from the gates than normal.  Some of you have also developed your own fitness by walking in with your children.  Impressive!  Less impressive are those parents who are parking in the Wilson School carpark.  We would kindly remind you that this carpark is not for parents, particularly not at 9.00 or 3.00.  Please use the surrounding streets or Valley View Rd to park.


Next Friday we will hold our first onsite whole school assembly.  It will be great to come back together to celebrate our achievements over the term and share our learning.  You are welcome to join us, either at 9.00 for coffee in the staffroom or in the Hall at 9.45.


You are invited to come along and welcome our new principal Jonathan Lambert to the school on Monday 20th July at 9.00 in the Hall.  I know that Jonathon is excited to be joining us and this Powhiri will be a great opportunity to extend our Whakawhanaungatanga (relationship building) and Manaakitanga (respect and hospitality) towards him.

Student led conference

The lockdown and ensuing transition back into school has impacted significantly on our programmes this year.  However, we have been very impressed with the resilience that our learners have shown, and wanted an opportunity for them to share their current learning and goals with you.  We are holding student-led conferences on Wednesday 5th August from 2.00 to 8.00pm.  I will set up a booking sheet on the School Interviews website prior to the holidays.

Scholastic Book Fair

If you’ve been hanging out to buy some new book titles for your children, hold off just a little bit longer so that you can come and browse the great selection at our annual book fair.  Come along and enjoy the pop-up bookshop in the library from Monday 3rd August to Wednesday 12th August and celebrate reading, and raise funds for books and resources for the school.

Last week I mentioned  that we were sending this survey home.  As you may have noticed, I haven’t gotten around to doing so.  I’ll get onto that this week, but in the meantime, I’ve had several inquiries about the online link so I thought that I would include that here for those of you that would be keen to complete the survey digitally.

Change to end of year date

The last day of school this year will be on Tuesday 15th December.  This is a day earlier than originally advertised.  The Ministry have recalculated the end dates based on the impact of the lockdown on the school calendar.

Breakfast Club

It has been great to welcome back some of our Kickstart breakfast customers.  We are still looking for a parent volunteer for Monday mornings.

Food Parcels

We are still seeking nominations of families to receive our food parcels. We would like to distribute these to families who may have suffered job losses or pay reductions during the lockdown.  Self nominations or nominations of friends would be gratefully received.   If you are struggling at the moment, or know of a family who is, please let us know.

Board of Trustees News: 

School Donation Replacement Scheme  

A Budget 2019 initiative saw all Decile 1-7 state and state integrated Boards of Trustees given the choice to receive a $150 per student, per year payment added to the school operations grant instead of seeking donations from parents.  Although donations to schools are voluntary, families can feel under pressure to pay them and this can place pressure on household budgets. This initiative was designed to alleviate that pressure and expectation. It also recognised that Decile 1-7 schools can find it difficult to raise funds from their communities.  Where a school opts in, there are limitations on what it can then ask families to pay for and it means that the school would no longer be able to ask parents to pay the annual school donation – the link below helps explain this:

Last November the WRS Board of Trustees agreed to accept the scheme for 2020.  The funding provided by the Ministry of Education is to cover donations and school trips and events, excluding overnight camps and after-school sport fees.  The Board believed that this would take  significant pressure off many of our families.   The school staff will have to make decisions about the frequency and contexts of trips and events in order to work within the budget provided, but we are committed to maintaining a range of experiences for our learners.  Obviously this year, the lockdown has seriously impacted on our ability to plan and/or undertake trips and outings so far this year, but team leaders are thinking ahead to Terms 3 and 4 to ensure we make good use of this funding.

Shortly the Board of Trustees need to decide whether or not to recommit to this scheme for 2021. However, before this decision is finalised we would welcome any feedback you have on this.

Sports Update – Registrations are through your Kindo account. Please ensure you have completed the registration which includes making a payment.

Harbour Basketball:   We are now accepting enrollments for Basketball for Semester 2. That is due to begin in Term 3, likely August 4th. Teams are for year 1/2, year 3/4 and year 5/6.

Netball: Games will take place on Saturday mornings. Year 3’s and year 5/6’s will play at Glenfield College. Year 4’s will play at Westlake Girls High School.

Rippa Rugby: The Rippa Tournament has been confirmed. There will only be One Day for Rippa Tournament on Wednesday August 26th. The cost has been slightly reduced, however we will be hiring a bus to transport us to and from the tournament which will be funded by the registration fees. We will still require parent help on the day. If you are available please contact Sarah Turner.

  • Spare Clothing –  We recommend the students always have a change of clothes in their bags.
  • Head Lice – Please check your child’s hair weekly as unfortunately head lice are very common in the community. We have attached the link to the Ministry of Education parent information website with more information.  For advice on  treatments:   Will my child have to stay away from school? No, the school will not exclude your child or ask you to keep them at home because they have lice. You don’t need to keep your child at home while you’re treating lice either. We have combs available in the office, but also your local chemist and supermarket will sell products.
  • Sunshine Online –  Free access to all families to use these books – Login – windyridge1 – Password – windyridge
  • Walking School Bus –   We have 3 Walking School Buses at WRS.  They leave from Stephanie Close, Stanley Road, Hiwihau Place.  Most of them leave around 8.15am in the morning to get the students to school for 8.30am.  If you would like your child(ren) to come on the Walking School Bus AND are able to help just one morning or afternoon a week, see Mrs Boyce in the office for a form and she will pass your details on to the right person.  The Walking School Buses are solely run by awesome volunteers so your help is always appreciated.
  • Lost Property – Please remember to check our lost property bin on the hall deck for any lost items, please name all items of clothing, lunch boxes and drink bottles.

  • Attendance – Please ensure that your children arrive at school on time and that we are aware of their absence by 9.00am each day.  You can telephone the office and leave an absence message or go online to the school website and use the Report an absence tab or use the Skool Loop app.  We do follow up lateness and absence as we are required to report on both to the Ministry of Education and the Board of Trustees.  If you are planning a holiday in term time please advise your child’s teacher and the office.

Community News






Whānau Mārama Parenting is a well established, community-based organisation who is fully committed to, and passionate about reducing the statistics of child abuse and family harm in Aotearoa New Zealand. We endeavour to achieve this goal by constantly working towards being a respected, dynamic organization through the development and delivery of non-punitive, extremely practical and highly effective courses for parents.

We believe that parents have the power to change our world for the better. To fulfill this vision we work consistently to empower parents with practical skills and strategies on how to effectively discipline their children without resorting to punishment, teach them how to establish mutually respectful loving parent-child relationships and give parents ways to successfully help their children learn what they wish to teach them.

We do this by delivering highly effective parenting courses each week. Our three core courses are specially designed for different age groups, from new-born through to teenage years. All these courses are created using a bi-cultural framework between Māori and Pakeha and illustrate how to parent in a positive Kiwi way. These courses are delivered in both English are and also Mandarin.

Auckland Transport’s Safe Speeds programme

Speed limits are changing across Auckland

On the 30th of June this year speed limits will change on many of the high-risk roads across our local road network.

Why are the speed limits changing?

Auckland Transport is working through a multi-year programme (the ‘Safe Speeds Programme’) to review speed limits on roads across our local road network to ensure they have a speed limit that is safe and appropriate for the function, design and use of the road.  Safe and appropriate speed limits will support our transport network to move people and goods effectively, efficiently and safely across Auckland.

At the end of 2019 the Auckland Transport board passed a bylaw to set new safe and appropriate speed limits on approximately 10% of the network and the first of these changes will come into effect on 30 June 2020.

Where are speed limits changing?

Most of the changes in this first phase are in Rodney, Franklin and Waitemata, including the city centre.  Plus on 98 other roads across the region. A full list of the changes can be found at

What are the limits changing to?

The new limits vary according to the type of road. E.g. urban or rural. The city centre roads will have 30km/h and 40km/h speed limits. These new limits recognise there are a growing number of vulnerable road users like pedestrians and people on bikes in the city centre. Details of all the roads and changes can be found on our website.

What happens next?

New speed limit signs will be installed in the coming weeks and will be uncovered on 30 June 2020, the date from which the limits will be legally enforceable by NZ Police. From the 1st of June there will be a public information campaign letting people know of these changes.

This is the first phase of tranche one. This tranche will be completed by November 2021. We are in the process of planning the second tranche of roads to assess.

Background to the Safe Speeds programme

Auckland has had a growing problem with death and serious injuries on our roads and at Auckland Transport we’re serious about tackling that problem.  We’ve developed a Safe Speeds Programme to review speed limits as required under the Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2017 to support our transport network to move people and goods across our region effectively and efficiently, without compromising people’s safety.  We believe everyone deserves to get home safely.

We’ve also adopted a Vision Zero approach to support our target that no one dies or is seriously injured on our roads by 2050.  Setting safe and appropriate speed limits, particularly on our high-risk roads and intersections, is one of the fastest and most cost-effective ways of stopping unnecessary deaths or serious injuries occurring on our roads.

In March 2019, Auckland Transport consulted with the public on the then proposed speed limit changes. Close to 12,000 feedback submissions were carefully analysed over the following months. In October 2019, the Auckland Transport Board passed the Speed Limits Bylaw 2019 to set new speed limits, including those coming into force on 30 June 2020. This first phase of changes targets high-risk roads where there has been a history of deadly crashes (extracting data from the Crash Analysis System maintained by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency with input from NZ Police).
