Nga mihi nui kia koutou katoa
This is my final newsletter. I have often joked that no one ever reads this but I know from conversations with families that many people do. I appreciate your feedback and I hope that over time I have managed to post things that have kindled your curiosity or challenged your thinking. Or even corrected some traffic behaviour!! I leave you with some words from my assembly speech, and I thank you for being part of my journey in life. It has been a pleasure, a challenge and a blast.
Kindest regards to all and thank you, Brenda
In the last 10 years our journey as a school has been working towards an understanding of what children need to become happy, kind and contributing members of society. We have struggled with the concepts of traditional education that conflict with accepted understandings of child development and brain science. We have questioned everything about schooling to find a way to honour the child, rather than change them into a more standard version of themselves.
This journey has been difficult and challenging. Change can be unsettling and not everyone has been able to see the value or the intent of the change. We have at times been criticized and our professional expertise questioned. Through this we have clarified our understandings and strengthened our resolve. We are committed to designing education around the learner, not redesigning the learner to fit an adult focused system.
I want to acknowledge the support of our Board, both past and present, who have had unfailing confidence in their teachers to support us, the PTA who always look for ways to resource the innovative programmes we offer, and the many community members who have been so positive and encouraging, sharing stories about how their children are thriving in this environment.
We are a school that leads the way in implementing a truly child centered learning approach. We are visited by schools across Auckland and beyond, wanting to see what we do. We are contacted by families living outside our zone wanting to request enrollment through ballot as they have heard about what we do here, and value the innovative opportunities for their children.
As a community you can be extremely proud of your school. The commitment from your staff is outstanding. The level of professional dialogue and innovation is of a quality that drives change, and is consistently focused on student outcomes.
I am incredibly proud to have been a part of this journey and to have had the opportunity to lead this team, and see them find solutions that better meet the needs of our children.
I am forever invested in this school, and know that it will continue to grow and adapt while still keeping the needs of our learners at the centre of every decision. I will be watching to follow the successes, although at a bit more of a distance.
