Further Industrial Action – MONDAY 12th November SCHOOL WILL BE CLOSED
Despite best intentions, the current negotiations have not yet been successful.  Teachers and Principals continue to be very concerned about our ability to attract and retain staff, and the impact that this will have on our classrooms in the very near future.
As a result the NZEI members have decided to continue action, with a series of one day rolling strikes across the country next week.  Auckland starts the week with a regional strike on MONDAY next week.  The school will be closed on this day so you will need to make alternative arrangements for your children’s care.
As many of us are also parents, we certainly sympathise with the inconvenience facing families on these days; however we are doing this to ensure that all of our children have the teachers and support they need in the future.   Thank you for the positive comments and encouragement we have received, and we appreciate your support.
Special Education Announcement: Learning Support Coordinators
We welcome the news that the Government will fully fund the equivalent of 600 Learning Support Coordinator positions in 2020.   The announcement is a constructive response from the government to the fact that the number of children with complex needs is growing while the learning support job is currently squeezed in around the day job of principals, senior leaders and classroom teachers.
Although the current teacher shortage will make finding an additional 600 teachers challenging, the creation of this role will help support teachers and school leaders, and reduce their workload — so making the job of a teacher better supported and more appealing.
Despite the current teacher shortage, the role must be filled by qualified teachers employed in and by schools. Those filling the roles need to be close to children and their whanau,  understand the process of teaching and learning and be able to build capability in other teachers and education staff.
We look forward to hearing more detail in how these positions will be staffed and we congratulate the Government on making a commitment to supporting students with additional learning needs.
Working Bee
We are holding a working bee on Saturday 17th November to remove plants along one of our neighbouring fence lines in preparation for a new fence to be installed in mid January.  We would love a hand so if you have an hour or 2 to spare bring along your gardening gloves, spades, axes, wheelbarrows, rakes, anything handy for removing plants.

Hello from the Board!

Welcome back to what looks a very busy Term 4. The teachers and kiddies are all well into their Term activities and enjoying the warmer weather. Next Monday 12 November brings the next stage in industrial action by teachers nationwide, and as a show of support, the Board has decided to close the school for the day.  There won’t be any staff on the premises so please make alternative arrangements for your child/ren.  Thank you in advance.  Looking ahead to May/June 2019, there will be the triennial Board of Trustee elections. Windy Ridge School requires a minimum of five representatives from the community.  Is this you?  Have a think and next year we will be inviting interested parties to come along to meetings to see how we do things here at Windy Ridge. Thank you all again for your ongoing support of our small school in the big city. Warm regards.

Of course, in line with our Travelwise policy, we promote our students (especially from Year 3 up) walking to school.  We have four Walking School Buses and children who live further from school can be dropped off a distance from the school so that they can complete their journey to school by foot.  Our Travelwise Students will be promoting active, safe travel to school over the term.
