News from the Principal

Staffing News
We have the best team of dedicated people working at our school, and when we face challenges or celebrate successes we do it together.   So firstly, we have some wonderful family news to share with everyone.
Congratulations to Mrs Ogden on the birth of her first grandchild, Samuel, on the weekend.   Congratulations also to Mrs Ross-Thompson and her family on the news of their third child due early next year,  AND also to Ms Cook and her family as she is also expecting their 2nd child around the same time.
I would like to also acknowledge the staff we have that are working over and above to meet work expectations while also supporting family members facing serious health challenges, and on your behalf send support and best wishes to them.
WELCOME: We would like to welcome Mrs Jude Tabuteau to Pukeko team for the remainder of this term while Mrs Andrews is away attending to family matters.   Jude is a regular reliever in our school so will be a positive and familiar presence in the team.
On a far less exciting note I am travelling to the NZ Principals conference next week and so will be away from school from Tuesday to Friday.  Mrs Millard and Ms Maxwell will be capably running the school in my absence and have my complete confidence.  Please contact the office if there is something you need to speak to a Senior Leader about and one of them will be in touch.  I will be back for the last week of term.

Science Opportunity – Year 4 and 5 students and families

For the first time at WRS we are excited to be offering selected Year 4 and 5 students and their parents the opportunity to participate in Family Science Workshops.  There is no cost involved.

The Term 4 workshops are aimed at creating an interest in science and science careers, and are facilitated by scientists and engineers, as well as university students who are studying STEM subjects.

We will be offering 12 students (in two groups of six), along with one of their parents/caregivers, the opportunity to participate in two science workshops, to be held on Wednesday evenings next term.  The workshops run from 5.45pm – 7.30pm, and  introduce topic-specific scientific concepts, with associated interactive games and role plays.  The evenings begin with pizza and a chance to chat with the scientists.   The two workshops that we will be offering in Term 4 are ‘DNA Extraction’ and ‘Electrical Energy’.

The confirmed dates for each set of workshops are:

  • Group A (Wednesday 25th October and Wednesday 1st November)  or

  • Group B (Wednesday 8th November and Wednesday 15th November)

As part of the selection process, students must fill in the application form (including making sure a parent/caregiver will be available to accompany them) and return it to Miss Hurley by Monday the 18th of September.  This form was been sent home yesterday and is also on the school website.

(Please note – Unfortunately this year we are limited to only twelve students, but if the workshops are successful we intend to continue running them next year, so other students may have a chance to participate in them in the future.)

Quiz Night – PTA event
This Friday (15th September) at 7pm there is a Quiz night to fundraise for the school. Tickets cost $20.
