Visitors at School – Education Review Office

This week we have been hosting some reviewers from the Education Review Office who have returned to complete a scheduled  three year review.  Thank you to the parents who joined us for the powhiri on Monday.

The Education Review Office (ERO) is the New Zealand government department that evaluates and reports on the education and care of students in schools and early childhood services.  Education reviews are reports to Boards of trustees, managers of early childhood education services and the Government on the quality of education provided for children and students in individual centres and schools.

This week the team has spoken with senior leaders, classroom teachers, students, the Board and some parents.   Their focus has been on student achievement, and we have had very valuable discussions as we have shared our school’s journey since last review.   They will present their findings to the Board at the end of this week, and then a final report will be published some weeks after that.  Once we have received a confirmed report it will be made available on both the ERO website and on the school website.

 Science in a Van
We had lots of fun at ‘Science in a Van’ today.  The programme was fast-paced, energetic and engaging for all involved.   The presenters were very skilled in delivering learning, and I am sure that your children will have many new facts about science to share with you.
Dance – Hip Hop and Ballroom
The final session for both the Year 4 Hip Hop and Year 5/6 Ballroom is next week.  This session is a performance session and parents are very welcome to come and join us for this.  Details of times and days are in a notice sent home today – please ask to see it. Hip Hop Year 4 Notice  Ballroom Dance Years 5 & 6 Notice
Cross Country – Reminder and Update
We have planned to run the cross country on Friday, but the weather is not looking very supportive.  However given that Auckland weather is very unpredictable, we will make a final decision by Thursday lunchtime.  Plan B might involve running the senior students even if it is drizzling, but postponing the juniors for a nicer day next week.  We will confirm this asap.
The Cluster Cross Country event is planned for Thursday next week so we need to pick our team of senior students before then.
House Captains
We are in the process of choosing our new house captains, and these will be announced at the next school assembly – Friday 15 September.  Thank you for your patience.
Junior Playground – Tower to be closed
The time has come to decommission the old Tower in the existing junior playground.  We have decided to close it for use from now on and remove it permanently in the school holidays.   The age of the materials means that we are no longer confident that we can repair it satisfactorily and  in the interests of health and safety we need to say goodbye.   It has been well-loved by generations of WRS students, but now needs to make way for the new playground equipment coming in the near future.    We will ensure that signs are in place to indicate it is closed, but ask you to keep this in mind when your children are using the grounds on weekends.
Slapped Cheek
We have been notified of a case of Slapped Cheek or Fifth disease at school. The condition is contagious for up to 2 weeks prior to the rash appearing, once the rash appears it is no longer contagious. The child usually presents with red cheeks then a fine rash can appear on their arms, torso and limbs.  If you are concerned about your child please keep them at home and contact your doctor.
Early symptoms may include:
low-grade fever
chills
headache
body ache
sore throat
diarrhoea.
