News from the Principal

Happy New Year to all.  I hope you have enjoyed this time with your families, and that the weather has been kind to you.  This newsletter is just a short update for you and normal newsletters will start again in WEEK 2 of the new term.
Office Hours
The School office will be open next week between 10 am and 2 pm Monday – Thursday should you need to see us for anything before the start of the year.  Teachers will not be available however as they are involved in professional development meetings all week, including a full day conference on the 31st January at Glenfield College.
We are delighted to welcome Dave Walton to our team for term 1.  Dave is taking over from Brian Taylor as our school caretaker, and has already been hard at work over the break supervising building projects, cleaning up gardens, mowing lawns, fixing the multitude of broken things and many other everyday tasks of a school caretaker.  He comes to us with experience at other schools, and we look forward to having him around the school.  Please say ‘Hi’ when you see him.
Our other new teacher is Ms Bernadette Mahoney, who will be teaching ion Rm 13 as part of Tui team. We are really looking forward to having her on staff, and know that the children in Room 13 will certainly benefit from her expertise and enthusiasm.  Welcome Ms Mahoney.
We have five separate building projects on the go over the break:  re-roofing of two blocks, repairs to Rm 13, new classrooms (Rooms 5 and 14), and the installation of an extra temporary toilet block in the senior part of the school.  As you can imagine this is an interesting process to balance the time frames for each and  still achieve completion before February 1st.  While we have planned for everything to be completed, please be patient with us if it is not.  Often times these things are out of our control.
We are still awaiting news on the fencing and covered walkway to Wilson Unit rooms for the staff carpark.  We have completed some preparation work for this, but do not yet have a date from the Property team at the Ministry. Watch this space!

First Day of term 1 – As usual our first day of the term starts at 9.10am with a powhiri assembly to welcome our new teachers, students and families.  You are most welcome to attend if you wish.

School Zone, class sizes and roll growth  We are all looking forward to 2017 and the challenges, celebrations and new learning it will bring.  The school is certainly in good health, and our roll continues to grow with new enrolments over the holiday break.  As you know our cohort or year group sizes are very uneven and this poses a challenge for us in organising students in to rooms each year.  Experience and research tells us that class size does matter, and also that children do not need to be in rooms with their age peers in order to have positive relationships or academic success. The key factors in accelerating student achievement and progress are quality teaching, safe and happy classrooms, and positive professional relationships between teachers and students.  These are things that WRS strives to achieve every year.  Our mixed year level classrooms have been very successful, and while not new to education, are certainly becoming very common in schools around NZ.  It also allows us to better place new students as they enrol during the year, without over crowding some year level rooms.

Our roll has increased dramatically in the last two years, requiring us to  request extra classrooms from the Ministry of Education.   As a result the Ministry has asked us to put a school zone in place to manage our school size in order to better manage our demand for property.  I have received information and maps over the holiday that I will be sharing with the community early in term 1, for a Zone start in term 2 of this year.  All of the implications and guidelines will be made clear in term 1, and a meeting held to offer opportunity for questions or concerns to be raised.  I will let you know when the date for this had been confirmed.

Take care and enjoy the last few weeks of the break.  Let’s hope the weather holds and we can all enjoy the sunshine, beaches and family fun.

  • WINDY RIDGE PARENTS Facebook – We have a closed Facebook page for Windy Ridge parents – you need to request to be part of this page. Search – Windy Ridge Parents. It is a valuable page for reminders, information, and general WRS ‘stuff’.
  • Parking: Parents please remember that our car parks are not available for parent pick ups and drop offs as they are for staff and disability parking only.  Also remember that when you are parking in Valley View Road there are signs limiting parking between 8.45-9.15am and 2.45-3.15pm.  Please park outside the designated area or be aware that this is a ticketable traffic offence.
