Teachers Union Meeting to discuss the Funding Review
As mentioned in the last newsletter, there is a planned stop-work meeting on FRIDAY 9TH SEPTEMBER for NZ teachers across all sectors (early childhood, primary and secondary) to find out more about the implications of the school funding review. Primary school teachers do not take industrial action lightly as we know the impact it has on the families in our communities; however there are significant concerns and some possible misinformation about the proposals that need to be discussed before consultation surveys close.
There continues to be more press releases on this topic each week, none of which we are aware of in advance of the media coverage eg Communities of Online Learning, changes in special needs funding priorities. Some of these proposals appear to have the potential to impact our schools in a negative may, with a stronger focus on finance and budgets than student needs and parent voice. The funding review as it stands does not address the adequacy of funding to schools; it is about the mechanisms for distributing the existing funding. Therefore there is potential for some schools to receive increased funding while others will have to lose funding to allow for that. The funding relates to both operating budgets and staffing provisions. For these reasons there is urgency in the sector having opportunity to discuss their concerns before any final decisions are made by the Minister of Education.
If you are able to organise it we would really appreciate you collecting your child early from school on the 9th at 12.30 pm, to enable staff to attend the meeting. We will have a few staff here at school to supervise anyone who can’t be collected early.
We are still in discussions with the Glenfield Pools about re-arranging the Junior team swimming for that day. More information to come once confirmed.
A notice will come home next week with a return slip to indicate what your plans are for your child on the day. We really appreciate your support in this matter.
Daffodil day – This Friday
To show support for the Cancer Foundation and cancer research, we are fundraising for ‘Daffodil Day’. Please wear something yellow if you can, and bring a gold coin to donate. We have daffodil flower pins available at the office for a separate donation.
A big thanks to all the families that joined us this week for Gumbrella Day Olympics. The children had a fabulous afternoon, and particularly enjoyed the opportunity to get muddy and wet. There are some fabulous photos on the school Facebook page. We appreciate the support from parents on these days as its important for our children to see that school and home work together.
If you are interested in playing chess at lunch time come along on Thursdays in Room 8.
School Notices are available on the school website.
- Attendance – Please ensure that your children arrive at school on time and that we are aware of their absence by 9.00am each day. We do follow up lateness and absence as we are required to report on both to the Ministry of Education and the Board of Trustees.
