Homelearning
Dear Parents / Caregivers,
The homework policy at our school states that children in the Y3-6 age group may be required to do a variety of tasks that involve basic skills practice (e.g. spelling, math tables, word study, topic related activities, etc). No child is expected to spend large amounts of time on school–related tasks at home. As a general rule, we suggest that children spend no more than 30 minutes per night.
If you have a computer at home, your child can go to our school website then navigate to the Room 10 web page where they will find the Homelearning menu and homework files. Your child needs to write down the title of each task and different parts of the task, so it is clear what the answers relate to. As for maths homework, your child can start with easy activities and move on. Alternatively, your child can ask the teacher which stage he or she is at and work at their ability level.
If you haven’t got a computer, it is your child’s responsibility to ask the teacher to print out the homework sheets.
If your child is a hands-on person, he or she can try science, hands-on activities. It is important to write a brief reflection about the experiment such as the best part of the activity, what can be improved next time, and what has been learned from this activity.
The Homelearning exercises have been set up for the whole 2011 academic year and I will add more tasks to the Inquiry File as your child's learning develops. Each week, your child needs to do 3 of the tasks such as one English, one Maths worksheet and one hands-on activity or one Inquiry topic. This allows your child to work at his or her own pace. It is also important for the child to enjoy playtime with the family.
Please encourage your child to set out the homework book neatly. Please sign your child's work at the end of each week to indicate that it has been checked by you. Please also remind your child to bring his or her homework book back to school every Friday for the teacher to mark.
Thank you very much for your co-operation.
