NZ History conversation

You may have seen a press release recently indicating that the Ministry of Education will be working on specific guidelines for the teaching of NZ history in our schools, to be implemented in 2021.  This has been a discussion in schools for a very long time and it is great to see some action from the Ministry on this.  It comes at a time that schools are being asked to consider their local curriculum – what are the stories, events, places and people that are specific to each school, and how are they shared and celebrated.  It is an opportunity for local communities to have input into the content of their classroom programmes, and is something you will hear more about in the coming months.

Earlier this week I spent three days in Taranaki, learning from locals about the history involved in the Taranaki Land Wars and the sacking of Parihaka.  These events in history are significant in the way they shaped our country at the time, and have influenced lives and environment since then.

These stories are the ones that need to be told as part of our history lessons, and contribute to our local curriculum.  Every region in NZ has these sorts of stories, and others that celebrate successes and achievements.  It is important that our children know them – it is their history too.

Thank you – I was on road patrol this morning and noticed how much better the traffic behaviour was around the school.  On behalf of our children, thanks to everyone who is making an effort to keep them safer around the roads.

Dear Parents and Caregivers
Yes it’s that time again. Frightening as it may seem, we are now just over 1 week before the end of term and the dreaded “We’re Bored” conversations begin again. We are therefore pleased to release our latest holiday programme and we’ve attached it to this message so you can take a closer look. It is chock full of activities and some really fun trip days as well. In week one we are heading off to TAPAC theatre for the live stage show of Alice in Wonderland and we’ll head over early so the kids can have lunch and a play in Western Springs Park. In week two we’ll be spending most of Thursday over at the Spring Carnival at Greenlane Expo center. This is an indoors carnival with tons of bouncy castles and rides, it’s going to be epic! We’ve also found Auckland’s largest indoor Playland and will be invading that in week two. As if that isn’t enough, there will also be Minecraft, Nerf Wars, Book days, Kids choice and yummy baking. As long as the weather plays nice, we will also have an explorer day where we track down the best local parks for play and picnic lunch. Oh and due to popular demand, the bouncy castle will be making an appearance again. On the last day, we’ll chill out with some big screen action.  As always, there are plenty of booking options, including full day 7.00-6pm, short day 8.30-3pm as well as half day sessions. There’s even an extra special full week discount and OSCAR subsidies are available for qualifying families.  Spaces are strictly limited on a couple of our big trip days this time due to venue restrictions (Alice in Wonderland & Carnival), so please get in quick to secure your space and to avoid disappointment. If you have any questions, please feel free to drop into the hall to talk to our friendly team. Otherwise we look forward to seeing you all on the 30th. Skids Holiday Programme
Kind regards
The sKids Windy Ridge team.
