News from the Principal

Staffing
We are very sad to say that Mrs Harries will be leaving us early in Term 4 as she has won a position at Silverdale School, much closer to her home in Wainui.  We have been very lucky to have had Mrs harries here for 11 years, but we wish her all the very best as she moves on to her next adventure.  We are in the process of finding her replacement and will inform you as soon as we have someone confirmed.
And yet ANOTHER cause for celebration – our Mrs Tyler is expecting her second baby early next year, and we send our congratulations to her and her family.  The staff is certainly doing their part to maintain the school roll!
Year 6’s  Move to Intermediate School.
Just a reminder that you will need to enrol your Year 6 student at Intermediate school now if not already done.  Schools need to know well in advance of the first day who is coming so they can organise enough staffing and resources for their students.  You should not need to pay fees or donations in order to enrol.
Te Reo Whanau  –  Māori lessons for families
Our awesome Te Reo Māori tutor Whaea Keri will be running half hour Te Reo Maori lessons for parents and adult whanau for 6 weeks next term. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn alongside your children, and start to use Te Reo at home also.   Please complete the Survey Monkey below to register interest – completing this survey does not commit you to the lessons as we just need to gather interest and information to schedule the lessons. That said though there are only 25 spaces so the sooner you can confirm your place the better.  Please note that it is important that you attend as many as the 6 weekly sessions as possible as we will be evaluating how successful this programme is and how well it has been received by our school whānau.  We is hoped that we will be able to offer the programme for the school year in 2018 if this way of delivery ticks all the right boxes.  The lessons are open to all –  we ask only a gold coin koha (donation) to attend.               Survey to complete
NZ Principals Conference 2017
Last week I was privileged to attend the NZPF Conference in Queenstown. The conference theme was  Hauora (Wellbeing) and this was discussed in relation to both staff and students.  The speakers were varied and excellent; Sir Graham Henry (leadership under pressure), Mike King (youth suicide and resilience), Judge Andrew Becroft (child poverty and inequity),  Sven Hansen (the Resilience Institute), Steve Francis (high functioning teams).  With over 600 delegates there were may opportunities to discuss current practice and common stresses facing our schools.
Community Survey
The role of the Board of Trustees at Windy Ridge School is to ensure that all students have equitable access to education and are reaching their full potential as individuals.  We also have to ensure that we are providing a safe physical and emotional environment for students and employees.
It is important to us to connect with our community and to receive feedback.  We would appreciate it if you took the time to complete this survey.  Your answers are submitted anonymously direct to Stacey Anderson, Board Trustee.

Reunion – 50 Years of WRS
On the 27th and 28th October we are celebrating our 50th birthday, as the school was officially opened in 1967.  The celebrations begin on Friday at 2 pm with a special assembly to welcome our visitors back to the school with a Powhiri, and the opening of the Time Capsule, closed at the last reunion 25 years ago.
On Saturday 28th the school will be open from 11 am until 3 pm for a Family Fun day.  There will be concert items, a photo booth, cake stall, sausage sizzle, Families in Parks games and equipment, and our classrooms will be open for viewing.
We will be sending home one cake box for each family to fill with something yummy that we can sell at the Reunion Fun day – this will come home early next term.
Current students do not need to register for the reunion, but we will need parents and past students to register at reunion@windyridge.school.nz.  Please see the WRS Parents page for more information.
Anniversary Reports
Some children in Years 1-3 will be receiving their anniversary reports this Friday.  Depending on when they started school our children receive reports in either Term 1 & 3 or Term 2 & 4, with one being a progress report and the other an achievement report. If you received a report last term you will not get one this time.
Out of Zone Enrolments for 2018
Enrolment at Windy Ridge School is governed by an enrolment scheme, details of which are available from the school office.  The Board has determined that there will be limited places available for out of zone new entrant students.  These will likely be filled by siblings of current students.  There may be limited places at other year levels.  The deadline for applications is 18th October 2017.  A ballot will be held on 24th October 2017. Ballot forms are available from the school office or office@windyridge.school.nz.  Parents of students who live within the school zone and intend on enrolling their children at any time next year, should notify the school as soon as possible to assist in planning appropriately for 2018.
FINALLY – don’t forget that school closes for the term this Friday at 3pm.  You have two weeks with your children before we start back again on Monday 16th October for our final term of the year.
Please take care and enjoy the holidays.  Feel free to use the school grounds and playgrounds during the break, and if you see anything of concern let Mr Walton, our caretaker, know or phone the Glenfield Police for concerns about property damage or dangerous behaviour.  (ph 4438039)
Happy Holidays everyone.
